ESS2.D: Weather and Climate
In this activity, students walked around the school grounds and observed water pools. They began to think about how these water pools were formed. They were prompted to think about water sources like water spouts, pipes, and hoses, as well as natural causes.
This student brings in prior knowledge about rain forming in puddles. The student also recognizes that physical features of the landscape, like hills or lower parts of the earth, can move water to certain locations. Specifically, this student recognizes that water moves from high to low places (Sample A). In Sample B, the student is making predictions about where water might pool, having an idea about a specific location—close to the fence—but she struggles to articulate the causal reason for why the water might pool there.
