ESS2.C: The Roles of Water in Earth’s Surface Processes
Students collected their data and created a data display to be shared to the entire class. Each student group was asked to make a presentation on video. The videos were later given to each student to watch so that they could record the findings from across the investigations. This group presentation focused on the role of water and its effect on soil temperature.
Sample A shows the student procedures, data table, graph, and conclusion of this group. Sample B shows a video of students explaining their data and conclusions. Interestingly, students are grappling with reading what might be inconclusive data. The students mention that the data is basically the same, although the graph shows a slight pattern of soil temperatures decreasing with increasing water presence. Although students are not ready for it, they are intuitively in need of statistical significance tests when the data is too difficult to discern.
